about

Most pieces on this album are from the standard repertoire of the KSK (国際尺八研修館; Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshūkan) as devised by its founder Yokoyama Katsuya (横山勝也; 1934–2010). It consists mostly of traditional honkyoku (本曲; ‘original pieces’; tracks 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) as transmitted from the komusō (虚無僧; mendicant Zen monks) via Watazumi Dōso (海童道祖, 1911–1992) to Yokoyama-sensei and original compositions by Fukuda Randō (福田蘭童; 1906–1976; tracks 2, 9), his second main teacher. Tracks 3, 7 and 11 are my own compositions.

I would like to thank all my music teachers and educators over the years, which are too numerous to list. Special thanks to Kakizakai Kaoru-sensei (柿堺香) for guiding me on my shakuhachi path with patience, encouragement, superb skill and humour; Neil Mackie and Miyuki Williams for countless opportunities and providing the space to record this album; my parents for always supporting me in all I do. This album would not exist without Cordula’s endless support, encouragement and patience. So this is for her.

about

Markus Guhe Edinburgh, UK

I discovered the shakuhachi in Japan in 2012. Without knowing anything about the instrument I immediately took to the practice of playing because I found it to be a strangely satisfying activity. So I decided I wanted to 'get really good' at it. I received a master’s license in 2016. I play the traditional shakuhachi repertoire ('honkyoku') and combine the shakuhachi with taiko and electronics. ... more
